Musician was also nominated for Best Rock Video for his song “Human”
More than three decades after his first appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards, Lenny Kravitz returned to the event’s stage on Wednesday night. Backed up by his longtime guitarist Craig Ross, Quavo, and a troupe of dancers giving different generations of video vixen realness, he performed “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” “Human,” and a remix of his hit “Fly” with the Atlanta rapper. Released last month, the update to “Fly” was decked out in trap drums and hype verses from Quavo onstage as the dancers pivoted from hair metal glam to rap video vigor.
Kravitz won Best Rock Video this year for his clip for “Human,” a song off his 12th studio album, Blue Electric Light, which came out in May. He made his debut at the 1993 VMAs with “Are You Gonna Go My Way” and claimed the Moon Person that year for Best Male Video for the accompanying clip.
The last time Kravitz appeared at the awards show was in 1998 when he played guitar accompanying Madonna on “Ray of Light.” Although Kravitz didn’t play on the album version, he has a long history with Madonna, co-writing her hit “Justify My Lov,” with the superstar and Ingrid Chavez.
Other performers at this year’s VMAs include Megan Thee Stallion, LL Cool J, Sabrina Carpenter, Shawn Mendes, and Chappell Roan. The most nominated artists are Taylor Swift and Post Malone. The event is taking place at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
