The 31-year-old singer’s family have paid tribute to the One Direction star, who died after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Wednesday 16 October.
“We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time,” they said in a statement.
Payne is survived by his mother Karen, father Geoff and older sisters Nicola and Ruth as well as his seven-year-old son Bear, whom he shared with his ex-girlfriend Cheryl.
A preliminary autopsy showed that the singer sustained multiple injuries and suffered “internal and external bleeding” in the tragic fall, a police source told AFP on Thursday.
Shortly before he died on Wednesday, staff at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel called emergency services to report an “aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol” trashing his room and to express concerns for his safety. When the officers arrived, they discovered Payne had fallen into the hotel’s internal courtyard.
Devastated fans have flocked to the hotel to pay their respects to the late singer, leaving letters and flowers, lighting candles and singing songs.
