Lil Nas X Assault Charges to be Dropped After Mental Health Treatment

Lil Nas X Assault Charges to be Dropped After Mental Health Treatment

Lil Nas X is on track to get his felony assault charges dismissed as long as he follows through with a two-year mental health treatment plan.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to Billboard that on Monday (April 6), a judge granted a mental health diversion to the “Old Town Road” singer and rapper (Montero Hill). This means that if Lil Nas keeps up with his treatment regimen and stays out of trouble for the next two years, prosecutors will officially wipe his criminal charges for attacking police officers while clad only in underwear and cowboy boots this past August.

According to Rolling Stone, Judge Alan Schneider stated during a court hearing Monday that the incident was linked to Lil Nas’ bipolar disorder diagnosis and “aberrant from his normal conduct.” The musician checked himself into inpatient treatment soon after his arrest, and Judge Schneider said he “appears to be doing very well.”

Speaking to reporters outside the courthouse afterward, Lil Nas said he’s feeling “thankful” and that he’s “just going through the flow of life.” Asked what message he’d like to send his fans, Lil Nas said, “I love you so much, and I miss you so much.”

Lil Nas’ mental health diversion is set to run through April 2028, at which point the judge will decide whether to formally dismiss the charges. If that happens, his record will be wiped clean.

The 26-year-old Grammy winner was arrested last summer after allegedly attacking police officers who responded to reports that he was wandering around Ventura Boulevard wearing few clothes. He was charged with three counts of battery and one count of resisting arrest, felony charges that carried up to five years in prison if convicted.

Following the Aug. 21 incident, Lil Nas spent the weekend in jail before pleading not guilty to all charges and getting released on a $75,000 bond. In an Instagram video he posted after getting out, Lil Nas said the ordeal was “f–king terrifying” but assured fans, “Your girl is gonna be all right.”
