This week, Lil Wayne is an honorary Hoosier. Moments after Indiana University won the Playoff National Championship for the first time ever on Monday (Jan. 19), Tunechi congratulated the team on a job well done with a fired-up post on X.
Joining countless other college football lovers in celebrating the Hoosiers’ victory — with the exception of most University of Miami fans, probably — Wayne specifically shouted out IU coach Curt Cignetti and quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who won the 2025 Heisman Memorial Trophy in December. “Bignetti a Gangsta out there mayne!!! Great win!” the rapper wrote.
“They can change the Heisman Trophy to Mendoza stretching across the goal line!” he continued. “Why him and Coach look like they can star in their own version of Goodfellas?! I fwi.”
Wayne wasn’t the only star cheering Indiana on Monday night. Shortly before the Hoosiers beat out the Miami Hurricanes 27-21 — earning redemption after a long history of being one of college football’s underdog teams — Indiana resident John Mellencamp shared a photo of himself wearing an IU letterman jacket on Instagram and wrote excitedly, “GO HOOSIERS!”
Lil Uzi Vert also pulled up to the game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami with a Mendoza jersey after the QB personally invited the artist to come.
Beyond rooting for Team Cream and Crimson this week, Weezy is a big football fan all around. He often posts about his love for the Green Bay Packers and earned a bit of backlash from Chicago Bears fans earlier in January when he dissed quarterback Caleb Williams after the Illinois team beat Wisconsin in the NFL playoffs.
“We just loss a playoff game to a n—a w purple nails we fkn suk bear azz! Bare a–!!” he wrote Jan. 10 on X. “We don’t deserve to be in the playoffs. Straight like that.”
Later, Wayne clarified, “Ay Caleb don’t mind me bruh I’m just a cheesehead 4life & u just a killa & ya kilt us bad each time & 4 dat u get da praise gesture from me. I luh da game & it’d b impossible 2make dat statement without acknowledging & admiring yo game king! U a beast but ya still a bear.”
Williams — who often wears nail polish as a tribute to his nail tech mom — replied shortly after, “Weez it’s all love. #BearDown tho.”
