Lily Allen responds to critics of her lack of audience interaction on ‘West End Girl’ tour

Lily Allen has responded to criticism of her lack of audience interaction, saying that breaking character would “ruin the performance”.

The singer has been performing her acclaimed 2025 album ‘West End Girl‘ in full at the accompanying tour over the last year. The theatrical shows see her appearing on stage alone, singing to backing tracks and not speaking to the crowd.

The show has been widely praised, but has received criticism from some quarters, and now Allen has spoken about her reasons for not interacting with the audience.

In an interview with Perfect, she was asked what kind of response she hoped for from the crowd. “I’m literally not looking for a response!” she said. “And I can’t hear because my in-ears are so fucking loud. I can’t really see anything.”

“I want people to enjoy themselves, for sure. But it’s interesting. Because I’m not being me, or me at the moment, I can’t manipulate them.”

There is a support act.

The show has always been advertised as “Lily Allen performs West End Girl.”

I was a few mins late as my tights were laddered and i had to change them.

The show is just over an hour as it’s just the album in its entirety.

Explaining why she doesn’t speak to the audience, she answered: “I couldn’t possibly. Because then I’d have to come out of character and it would ruin the performance. I’m not saying what other people do, or what I’ve done in the past, is bad. It’s just not what’s happening here.”

“People have commented [about this tour]: ‘She doesn’t interact with the audience. Blah, blah, blah.’ I’d say to them, give me your top five audience interactions you’ve ever seen at a gig.”

NME caught the tour at the London Palladium in March, writing a three-star review that noted the deliberate lack of conventional concert dynamics. “Noticeably devoid of a live band (with Allen singing to a backing track for the entire show), backing dancers or any interaction with the crowd, this feels like a chance to better understand ‘West End Girl’ than a night out,” it read.

Allen has also not been playing any of her previous music, with a string section called the Dallas Minor Trio reimagining some of her classic tunes in the support slot.

She has previously hit back at any criticism of the tour, saying she was “extremely proud of it” and the format was her “artistic choice”, arguing that the “fourth wall helps with the storytelling”.

‘West End Girl’ was inspired by the breakdown of Allen’s marriage to Stranger Things star David Harbour, although she has described the record as “autofictional” and a mixture of fact and fiction. NME gave it four stars, hailing it as “a vicious, vulnerable and victorious comeback”.

Allen is currently on a break from the tour before returning to North America next month. In July, she moved several shows on that leg to smaller venues and cancelled the planned Montreal date.
