Lily Allen’s ‘West End Girl’ could be turned into a play

Lily Allen’s ‘West End Girl’ could be turned into a play

Lily Allen has said her new album ‘West End Girl‘ could become a play.

Allen has achieved huge success with ‘West End Girl’, selling out the biggest North American tour of her career next year, and releasing tickets for a slate of arena shows alongside her headline tour in Ireland and the UK. She is also due to appear on Saturday Night Live as musical guest on December 13.

Now, Allen has confirmed that the album is in the works to be adapted into a play. The popstar appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, telling Fallon it was “true” that there were talks in London to bring ‘West End Girl’ to the West End.

When Fallon asked whether Allen was “involved” with the plans, she replied: “I might be… The ink is not dry – is that what they say? Something like that?

“But, you know, I’m definitely having some conversations with people about it,” she concluded. “It’s very exciting.”

If ‘West End Girl’ were adapted for the stage, it wouldn’t be the first time Allen will have performed in the theatre. The singer made her West End debut in Matthew Dunster’s 2:22 A Ghost Story in 2021, and went on to star in the revival of Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman play in 2023. She also appeared in Dunster’s reinterpretation of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler earlier this year.

She has also dabbled with acting in films and TV, first starring as a lady-in-waiting in the 1998 film Elizabeth. More recently, Allen performed as Elizabeth Taylor in 2019’s How To Build A Girl alongside her brother Alfie, and also appeared in comedy-drama Dreamland in 2023.

Allen also spoke about her upcoming SNL performance, telling Fallon that she had appeared on the show nearly twenty years ago. She last performed from Studio 8H in 2007, where she sang her hits ‘Smile’ and ‘LDN’ from her 2006 debut album ‘Alright, Still‘.

“I didn’t really understand the cultural significance of it then,” she recalled. “Now with the Internet, I know what a big deal it is, and I’m scared”.
