Guitarist Schenker, who had a series of spells in UFO most notably between 1973 and 1978 and 1993 and 1995, has looked back on his time with the London rockers on his new album ‘My Years With UFO’, which came out on September 20.
The album focuses on the songs he recorded with the band during his spell as a member in the 1970s, celebrating 50 years since his work with the band, and he’s got some of the biggest names in rock involved – including Guns N’ Roses frontman Rose.
Rose’s vocals put a new spin on ‘Love To Love’, and highlight the influence UFO had on GN’R. Listen to the track below:
As well as Rose, his GN’R bandmate Slash also features on the album, as do former Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, former Rainbow and Deep Purple singer Joe Lynn Turner, and vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, who has worked with guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen.
The album is the first of three that Schenker is set to release under a new record deal with earMUSIC – two more are planned for 2025 and 2026.
In an interview with the Appetite For Distortion podcast, Schenker said of his decision to make ‘My Years With UFO’ now: “In ’72 I joined UFO. I was 17 years old. In ’73 we recorded ‘Phenomenon’. In ’74, it was released. So it’s 50 years, a long time. And that’s when it started with UFO. And, of course, that gave me the idea to celebrate – 50th anniversary.
“And I have also noticed in the past few years that re-releases, they had no information – they just had the name UFO and the song titles, but there’s no info, no details. And so I thought I’d take this opportunity to inform people, to re-educate or educate newcomers that have — maybe they sing the songs, but have no clue what it is.”
