The new Lizzo era is here. On Friday, the pop star released her single “Love in Real Life” and its video, a week after hinting at a new era of music during a Twitch stream. Hours before the song dropped, Lizzo teased, “Time to put some gas in 2025.”
The cinematic video opens with Lizzo staring into a mirror in a lonely corridor before cutting to the singer riding shotgun dressed in a leather jacket as she sings, “Tonight, I might make an appearance since I look this fine, and plus, it’s been a while.” Soon, Lizzo finds herself in a club and things get nightmarish quickly, as the partygoers surrounding her momentarily transform into zombie-like creatures and chaos ensues.
As she runs away (and eventually joins) the horde of dancing ghouls, she declares: “By the end of the world, by the end of thе night/Baby, come over herе, I need love in real life.”
Earlier this week, the musician shared a teaser for the video, which captured her laying on a vintage white car as she narrated: “Everything was so much simpler, and that’s exactly what I need. No views, no likes. Real love. In real life.”
On Valentine’s Day, Lizzo hopped on Twitch to share a trailer for the new music to come. “I want to introduce to you guys, the newest piece of content from the new era. I’ve been working on new music for the last two years,” Lizzo said. “I took my time and I did it right. The new era has begun today, right now, with you, my chat.” In the clip, Lizzo is seen sobbing while looking at the camera over the eerie sound of a flute playing.
Earlier this month, Lizzo officially said “Bye, bitch” to her Special album, which she dropped in 2022, featuring “2 Be Loved,” the Grammy-winning “About Damn Time,” and “Special.” Aside from her Barbie soundtrack contribution “Pink,” Lizzo has taken somewhat of a pause from the public eye in the last year as she’s developed her shapewear brand, Yitty, and faced legal troubles.
