LL Cool J Recalls Hearing That Ol’ Dirty Bastard Urinated on His Plaques: ‘Loved Him Ever Since’

LL Cool J added to the enigmatic lore of Ol’ Dirty Bastard when recalling a time that ODB urinated on his plaques at a New York City studio.

LL joined SiriusXM’s Salute the Sample on Thursday (July 8), where he recounted getting one of the more bizarre phone calls in his life, which found the late Wu-Tang Clan rapper in a rage.

“I remember one time Chris Lighty called me up. He was like, ‘Yo, you gotta come down here. You gotta come to Chung King Studios,’” he said. “‘For some reason, Ol’ Dirty Bastard just came in here, broke all your plaques and pissed on ’em.’”

While others would’ve been angry at the situation, LL could only laugh, as some things aren’t meant to be understood when it comes to ODB. The plaque smashing somehow even added to their friendship.

“I said, ‘What I do?’ I didn’t even understand it,” he continued. “I couldn’t understand it. Loved him ever since. Shout out to Ol’ Dirty, man!”

Before his death, Chris Lighty provided more context on ODB’s outburst at Chung King Studios in an interview with Stuff Magazine in 2006.

“[Ol’ Dirty Bastard] came through twisted. He was talking gibberish on his rhyme and then gets mad at us because we weren’t gonna record him like that,” he said. “He started ripping gold and platinum plaques off the wall. And he definitely pissed on one of the plaques.”

The late music executive added: “At this point, he’s off the Richter scale. The receptionist calls the police, so we get out of there. At the bottom of the elevator, he changes his whole tune. He was laughing his a– off!”

ODB died at 35 years old in November 2004 due to an accidental drug overdose after collapsing at RZA’s recording studio in NYC.

As for LL Cool J, he’s gearing up to host his Rock the Bells Festival, which is slated to hit Long Island’s UBS Arena on Aug. 15. A lineup for the festival is yet to be announced.
