A previously unpublished interview with Amy Winehouse has been released almost two decades after it was recorded.
The late singer opened up about her career and marriage in a newly discovered “lost” interview with The Sunday Times, recorded in 2007.
In the wide-ranging chat, which was never published due to a scheduling conflict with a rival newspaper, Amy, then 23, described herself as so satisfied with her professional output that she could happily “die tomorrow”.
“When I was younger, yeah. The thought of dying without ever making my mark, that was my biggest fear,” the singer, whose 2006 album Back to Black has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, reflected.
“Dying without making a stamp on things. I know I’m only 23 but …”
She went on to explain how proud she was of her work on Back to Black, having single-handedly written most of its songs and co-written the rest.
“Yeah, I’m really proud of myself,” Amy said, before adding she wished her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, could achieve the same heights in his work as a screenwriter.
“I just want other people around me to do well. Like my baby … I’ve done well, you know what I mean? I’ve just done an album that I’m really proud of. If I die tomorrow then cool, do you know what I mean?”
Asked whether, having broken up and reconciled several times with Blake before their Town Hall wedding, she could see herself staying with Blake forever, Amy was adamant.
“I know we’re going to die together,” she told the outlet.
Amy died four years later in July 2011, from accidental alcohol poisoning. She and Blake had been divorced since 2009.
