Lucy Dacus covers Japanese Breakfast and shares previously unreleased ‘No Thank You, I Love You, Goodbye’

Lucy Dacus has shared a previously unreleased song called ‘No Thank You, I Love You, Goodbye’, and also performed a live cover of Japanese Breakfast’s ‘Paprika’.

The new song from Dacus comes as she is currently celebrating 10 years of her 2016 debut album ‘No Burden’ by releasing a reissue.

Dacus shared a lengthy statement on social media announcing the re-release, sharing that she wanted to do it because she has now got her masters back, and has been looking back at how things have changed since she wrote the songs.

She also confirmed that the reissue will feature a new song called ‘No Thank You, I Love You, Goodbye’, which was written at the time of the 2016 album but went unreleased until now.

“‘No Burden’ is 10 years old. I wrote these songs when I would not have called myself a musician, while I was working other jobs,” the musician shared. “I’d write them in my head during shifts as a box office attendant, or a yearbook photo editor, or a terrible waitress, or through any of the myriad odd jobs I took to work up $195 for my monthly contribution to the room I shared with two friends.

“I’d write down lyrics on sticky notes or napkins, hum it out on my walk home, then figure out a guitar part before going to sleep. It’s very easy to romanticise now. I didn’t think any of you would hear them. Maybe 50 of you? And those 50 know who they are.”

She said that she “recently listened to it for the first time in years” and noticed how she “literally hadn’t found my voice” at the time.

“I sound more southern too, which is sweet. Makes me wonder if I’ve subconsciously packed that away a bit, which would make me sad. We only had one day to record, and if we had more time, I might’ve found my footing, for better or possibly worse,” she continued.

“It means the world to me that, today, I get my masters back. ‘No Burden’ is mine. This day always seemed so far in the future, but here we are,” she concluded, adding that she was reissuing it “with new art, and adding ‘No Thank You, I Love You, Goodbye’ at the end since I wrote that song around the same time as the others.”

As well as releasing the 10th anniversary reissue of ‘No Burden’, Dacus has also played a slot at Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle – stepping in for a pregnant Japanese Breakfast. At the festival, the singer paid tribute to Michelle Zauner by performing a cover of her song ‘Paprika’. Check it out below.

Lucy Dacus’ latest album was ‘Forever Is A Feeling’, which dropped last year.

Earlier this summer, she made a guest appearance during Hayley Williams’ slot at Newport Folk Festival, joining the Paramore singer alongside Jack Antonoff, Jenny Lewis, Remi Wolf, Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman and Joy Oladokun.

Before then, she joined The Killers on stage at Osheaga Festival in Montreal last August for a rendition of ‘Read My Mind’, and also teamed up with Chappell Roan for a cover of the Magnetic Fields track ‘The Book of Love’ at Mustafa‘s Sudan and Palestine aid benefit show in Los Angeles.

In August, she brought out her Boygenius bandmate Julien Baker to perform ‘Bullseye’ at the Outside Lands festival.
