Madonna has slammed U.S. President Donald Trump for declaring himself a “king”.
The Queen of Pop has criticised the U.S. leader after the official White House X account shared a fake Time magazine cover showing a smiling image of him wearing a crown.
The image was accompanied by the words, “Long live the king.”
The post was shared shortly after Trump’s administration ordered New York to end congestion pricing. It included the caption, “CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!’ – President Donald J. Trump.”
Soon after the image was shared, a number of people criticised the White House for referring to Trump as a monarch.
Writing on her Instagram Stories, Madonna pointed out that America fought to break away from the British monarchy out of a desire for self-government.
“I thought this country was built by Europeans, escaping living under the rule of a King, to establish a New World governed by the people,” she wrote. “Currently, we have a president who calls himself our King. If this is a joke, I’m not laughing.”
The Material Girl hitmaker’s comments come weeks after she slammed Trump after he issued an executive order to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) positions in government departments and agencies.
“It’s so sad to watch our new Government slowly dismantling all the Freedoms we have been fighting for and WON over the years,” the singer wrote on X last month. “Don’t give up the Fight!”
