July 2, 2026, is Christmas Eve for Madonna fans, with the Queen of Pop releasing her 15th studio album, Confessions II, on July 3.
As the title indicates, the project is the follow-up to Madonna’s 2005 classic Confessions on a Dance Floor, on which she and producer Stuart Price fused disco, electronica, synth and dance pop. For these efforts, she eventually won the 2007 best dance/electronic album Grammy.
As Madonna has with all of her albums, she cultivated a singular aesthetic to go with and enhance the music. For Confessions on a Dance Floor, this look was ’70s-style feathered hair, bubblegum-colored leotards with tights and heels, snug leather jackets by Gucci and sequined belts. The dress code was key to Madonna’s presence in the culture from 2005 to 2007, with this look appearing on the album cover, its various music videos, her many press appearances and the legendary Confessions Tour, which hit 60 cities on three continents and included costumes designed by Jean Paul Gaultier.
This tour famously presented Madonna on a mirrored crucifix wearing a crown of thorns as she performed “Live to Tell” in what was a statement on the African AIDS crisis and also a move that drew criticisms from Catholic organizations around the world. “My performance is neither anti-Christian, sacrilegious or blasphemous,” Madonna said in a statement at the time responding to the outrage. “Rather, it is my plea to the audience to encourage mankind to help one another and to see the world as a unified whole. I believe in my heart that if Jesus were alive today, he would be doing the same thing.”
This past April, Madonna pulled some of these vintage clothing items from her archive and wore them during her appearance during Sabrina Carpenter’s headlining set at Coachella. It was later reported that these items — a lavender corset bodysuit, knee high boots, gloves and stockings — had been stolen, although authorities reported that they may have just fallen off the back of a golf cart.
