Mastodon Preview New Album With Rousing Single ‘Snakes For Dinner’

Mastodon will release a new album, Marrow Deep, on Aug. 28 via Loma Vista Recordings. The group previewed the LP with single “Snakes For Dinner,” which features guest vocals from Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme.

Marrow Deep follows 2021’s Hushed and Grim, and was created by the band’s founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders, and Bill Kelliher. The album was “inspired by the three fates of Greek mythology and the fragile threads connecting life, loss, and destiny” and “channels the intense personal experiences of the intervening years into some of the most expansive, adventurous, and emotionally resonant music of the band’s storied career,” according to a statement.

It’s the band’s first full-length to feature guitarist Nick Johnston, as well as contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira. It was co-produced by Mastodon at their own West End Sound in Atlanta with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou. “Snakes for Dinner” is Homme’s first appearance on a Mastodon recording 2006’s “Colony of Birchmen.”

“Bill, Brann, and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us,” Sanders said in a statement. “That’s a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice. It’s reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we’re united, and excited to get to work. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to do this record.”

Mastodon will embark on the Poisonous Weapons Tour in support of the album. The nationwide track will kick off Sept. 16 in Orlando and wrap Oct. 24 at Sick New World Dallas. Deafheaven and Alcest will support. Tickets are currently on sale.

Trending Stories

Earlier this month, Mastodon released a new video, The Mastodon in the Room, which sees the three founding members reflecting on good and bad times with late singer-guitarist Brett Hinds, who died in a motorcycle accident last year. At the time, only a few months had passed since Mastodon had announced that Hinds had parted ways with the group, with him later saying the band had fired him.

After Hinds’ departure, the band brought in Johnston as their new lead guitarist. Hinds did not contribute to Marrow Deep. Dailor told Blabbermouth earlier this year, “It was a hard record to make. It was a very emotional time for us. I lost my mom, we went through all this turmoil with Brent, and then he passed away. It’s been tough.”
