Megan Thee Stallion brought her venomous Megan album era to the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night with a massive medley that included “BOA,” “B.A.S.,” “Hiss,” and “Mamushi.”
Her night-long gig as the award show’s host didn’t stop her from pumping her infectious energy into sharp choreography, some of her hardest bars (particularly the infamous “Megan’s Law” line that enraged Nicki Minaj earlier this year), and performance that had her running all around New York’s UBS Arena. She traversed multiple sets in a bandage bikini, accompanied by scores of dancers and drummers. She introduced her “Mamushi” collaborator, Yuki Chiba, as he took the stage with her for their finale in his first VMAs appearance.
In addition to keeping the crowd entertained as the host of the show, Megan Thee Stallion also racked up seven nominations. Her GloRilla collaboration “Wanna Be” scored nods for Best Collaboration and Song of the Summer, while “Mamushi” won Best Trending Video.
“BOA,” which served as a lead single on Megan, earned nominations for Best Hip-Hop as well as Best Direction under Daniel Iglesias Jr., Best Visual Effects under Mathematic, and Best Art Direction under Brittany Porter.
Megan arrived in June with “BOA,” “Cobra,” and “Hiss” serving as its lead singles. The album featured 16 songs, including collaborations with Victoria Monét, GloRilla, and UGK. “This is music I would like if I wasn’t Megan Thee Stallion,” she said in an interview with L’Officiel earlier this year. “I don’t want to say I’m tapping into other genres. I’m just tapping into other sounds. But it’s still very much Megan Thee Stallion. It won’t feel like I went so left. It’ll feel true to me. You’ll almost be like, ‘I wouldn’t have thought she would’ve rapped over that, but this sounds great.’”
