MGK brings out Halsey for ‘Bad Things’, praises her resolve after “a very tough couple of years”

Halsey joined MGK on stage as a surprise guest at a recent Chicago concert, where they took on ‘Bad Things’ – check out the moment below.

With the rapper-turned-pop star’s ‘Lost Americana’ tour now well underway, one of the final dates of the year saw Halsey come out for an unexpected duet on MGK’s 2016 track ‘Bad Things’, with ‘The Great Impersonator‘ artist laying down Camila Cabello’s vocals at the Allstate Arena.

While the two – who previously joined forces on the 2020 track ‘Forget Me Too’, which also got a live outing at the show – were onstage together, MGK gave fans a moving speech about watching his friend navigate their health struggles, which include lupus and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder.

“I wanna give flowers to this amazing woman, who’s had a very, very, very tough couple of years,” he said. “Health scares that I got to personally watch her fight through, and I don’t know if we’ve acknowledged that enough, how much you mean to music, and how much you mean to me as a friend.”

“Seeing you that way during the time, and seeing you now …,” MGK continued, “I mean, this girl is still going through chemotherapy and fighting every day, and she’s out here crushing it.”

They have been undergoing chemotherapy treatments since being diagnosed with lupus and a rare T-Cell lymphoproliferative disorder in 2022, and have suffered a series of health scares in the years following.

In September 2024, the singer once again found herself hospitalised after suffering a “very scary” seizure, and recently hit back at an audience member who told her to “shut up and play”, saying: “I almost fucking died to be on this stage”.

Halsey released her fifth studio effort, ‘The Great Impersonator’, last October, and it was given a glowing five-star review from NME and later named one of our best albums of 2024.

“‘The Great Impersonator’ comes from a place she describes as ‘the space between life and death,” our review read. “On the surface, it’s a tribute to the artists who made her. But on the other hand, it’s a brutal reckoning with chronic illnesses and postpartum depression, written when she wasn’t certain if she’d make it to the other side.”

Elsewhere, during a recent Radio 1 appearance that saw him cover Gorillaz, MGK said he was “on this trajectory of wanting to be a stadium act”, citing Oasis as inspirations after seeing them at their huge Wembley shows.

“I’ve been an Oasis diehard since I first heard them 20 years ago – before I was 10 years old,” he told Ricky, Melvin and Charlie. “Zero production, just a great rock band playing great rock music. It was amazing.”

He went on to praise Liam Gallagher, saying he “just had the swag”. MGK added that although he had watched Liam perform at Reading & Leeds years ago touring a solo record “which I liked”, it wasn’t the same “when it was him and his brother”.

MGK has previously mentioned his love of Oasis to NME in our cover story from 2020. He called the Gallagher brothers “proper rock stars” and revealed that he had framed cartoons of the pair in his bedroom. He and Yungblud also covered ‘Champagne Supernova’ from their houses during the pandemic, and the pair recalled their ‘Supersonic’ karaoke night to NME at Reading Festival (watch the interview below).

MGK’s massive ‘Lost Americana tour’ of North America, UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand kicked off last month.

The musician will take a number of acts to support him throughout the tour including Wiz Khalifa, Julia Wolf, honestav, Beauty School Dropout, DE’WAYNE, Mod Sun, and Emo Night – see all dates here. You can also visit here for UK tickets, here for US and European tickets, and here for tickets to Australia and New Zealand shows.

He will tour his album ‘Lost Americana’, which saw MGK team up with Bob Dylan to help promote his new LP. He later joked that he had “no idea” how he secured the folk legend to narrate the teaser video, adding that it came out of “pure desperation” and him “just knocking on [Dylan’s] door relentlessly, not going away”.

In other news, MGK will mark the fifth anniversary of ‘Tickets To My Downfall’ with “five unreleased songs from that era”.
