Michelle Obama and Tems surprise young women at Presidential Center workshop

As part of the highly anticipated opening week at the newly inaugurated Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, former First Lady Michelle Obama and two-time Grammy Award-winning Nigerian artist Tems delivered an unforgettable surprise to a group of young women. The duo crashed an intensive songwriting workshop hosted inside the Center’s brand-new, state-of-the-art Media Suite.

The specialized session brought together 15 high school-aged girls from the local After School Matters program alongside various youth organizations operating under the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance Network. Led by acclaimed teaching artist Me’Chelle Robinson, known professionally as Darkhoneeey, the immersive workshop introduced the young participants to contemporary songwriting. The curriculum utilized the musical craft as a vital vehicle for personal storytelling, artistic collaboration, and emotional self-discovery.

During the creative session, the participants worked closely in small groups to compose original songs and poems rooted in their unique personal perspectives. Ahead of the final presentations, Tems shocked the room by stepping in to offer expert mentorship. The global music star reflected on her personal journey as a self-taught artist rising out of Lagos, Nigeria. She also discussed her newly formed Leading Vibe Initiative, an organization designed to close the music industry’s gender gap by providing young female creators with essential resources, workshops, and executive mentorship.
Following the student performances, Michelle Obama made her own surprise entrance to celebrate the pieces developed during the day. Joined by Tems, Mrs. Obama listened intently to the original material and delivered an inspiring speech encouraging the teenagers to confidently use their unique voices to shape the future.

The high-profile event highlighted the core underlying mission of the Obama Presidential Center, which aims to serve as a physical hub for creativity, civic leadership, and community connection for the next generation. The experience concluded with an intimate group photograph in the Media Suite, marking a historic milestone for the Foundation’s ongoing investment in youth empowerment.
