Miguel Calls Out Harassment of Partner and Child: ‘Legal and Ethical Lines Have Been Crossed’

Miguel has published an extensive statement addressing what he describes as more than a year of “racism, harassment, stalking, invasions of privacy, and false allegations” towards himself, his partner Margaret Zhang, and their child.

“Recent racist and anti-Asian attacks directed at my partner – including comments and DMs, as well as abusive comments about my child – crossed a line that should require no explanation,” Miguel wrote on Instagram. The singer-songwriter said he can “accept the realities that come with doing anything in public,” whether that be about himself or his music, “but racism, threats, harassment, stalking, invasions of privacy, and targeting of children are abuse. Not opinion.”

Without specifying any particular person or outlet, Miguel pushed for accountability from the online users who facilitate conversation online regarding his life. “Responsibility also lies with organizations and individuals that knowingly amplify or enable racism, harassment, or false allegations for attention and engagement,” he said. Those who engage with this content, or attempt to express their opinion directly, aren’t off the hook, either, he said. “It doesn’t become acceptable because someone dresses it up as criticism, fandom, speculation, or ‘concern.’”

Last year, Miguel releases Caos, his first LP in eight years. The record leaned into self-reflection and self-preservation informed by a divorce, his introduction to fatherhood, and an exploration of his Mexican roots through his signature alternative R&B sound. “This is an album about searching for meaning as you try your best to process a world on fire — and it’s a mood that should resonate with any honest listener,” Rolling Stone wrote in a review of the record.

Miguel is appreciative of the listeners who have “treated my family with kindness, dignity, and respect,” but wants everyone else to know and be warned: “If you participate in this behavior, you are not supporting me. You are not part of this community. Where legal and ethical lines have been crossed, action has been and will continue to be taken.”
