Miley Cyrus criticises awards season: “We’re meant to be a community, not opponents”

Miley Cyrus has reflected on the competitive nature of awards season, saying “performance runs so much deeper than a scoreboard”.

The pop star recently shared ‘Dream As One‘, a song for the soundtrack of Avatar: Fire And Ash – the latest instalment of James Cameron’s sci-fi franchise.

Yesterday (January 3), Cyrus attended the Palm Springs Film Awards, where she noted that the ceremony was refreshing as it was “without the stress of competition” as all 12 awardees are announced in advance.

“So often during awards season, we’re set up as competitors, but we’re meant to be a community, not opponents. There is no single best, it’s only our personal best work,” Cyrus told the audience, per The Hollywood Reporter.

“Numbers can make it feel like a sport, but performance runs so much deeper than a scoreboard, because each artist, they bare their soul in a completely unique way, and every contribution leaves its own mark on history,” she added.

“Whether you’re in or out of this industry, we all have a persona, even the ones that are rooted in authenticity, because self creation is an art form, and all of us, we perform genuinely,” she continued. “That’s something that I deeply admire in both award-winning actors and actresses, and the drag queens of Toucans — they’re kind of the same.”

Cyrus also expressed her appreciation she was able to support “stories like Avatar by my friend James Cameron – it’s always cool to say that,” and thanked the room for “recognising their work that I’m totally backpacking off of. They’ve worked on this movie for 16 years; I’ve been involved for like a month, and I get to go to all the same events!”

‘Dream As One’ saw her join forces with Andrew Wyatt, Mark Ronson and Simon Franglen. The track features in the end credits for the third Avatar movie, and was partly inspired by the devastating fires that tore across Los Angeles at the start of the year.

It comes after she revealed that she went to the 2025 Oscars to pitch herself as a songwriter for film.

Cyrus released her ninth studio album ‘Something Beautiful‘ last May – a record which NME hailed as “another pretty big swing” in a four-star review.

“‘Something Beautiful’ is sprawling and apparently unperturbed by contemporary chart trends,” we wrote. “While ‘Something Beautiful’ probably isn’t Cyrus’s most hit-packed album, it does feel like a fully realised artistic statement.”

The album included the track ‘Secrets‘, a collaboration with Fleetwood Mac‘s Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham. Cyrus went on to dedicate the track to her father Billy Ray Cyrus, saying: “This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved. In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same”.

In other news, Cyrus has said she still has no “desire” to tour, and has proclaimed she was “the first person to maybe ever be cancelled”.
