Miley Cyrus Hopes for the Future on ‘Avatar’ Single ‘Dream as One’

Miley Cyrus has released a new single, “Dream as One,” which she wrote for James Cameron‘s upcoming film Avatar: Fire and Ash. Cyrus co-wrote and co-produced the track with Andrew Wyatt and Mark Ronson.

“Even through the flames/ Even through the ashes in the sky,” Cyrus croons on the anthemic song. “When we dream, we dream as one.”

“Writing this song with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt came straight from the heart,” Cyrus shared on X. “Every lyric remembers where we’ve been, reflects where we are, and holds hope for what’s ahead for all of us. It was an honor to create something so personal for a film that connects so deeply with people around the world.”

Cyrus announced the track in October, writing on Instagram, “Having been personally affected by fire and being rebuilt from the ashes, this project holds profound meaning for me.” She added, “Thank you, Jim, for the opportunity to turn that experience into musical medicine. The film’s themes of unity, healing, and love resonate deeply within my soul, and to be even a small star in the universe the Avatar family has created is truly a dream come true.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in the franchise, will arrive in theaters on Dec. 19. The film will primarily center around a clash with the “Ash People,” a more villainous Na’vi tribe that Sully, Neytiri, and the Metkayina — the water clan from The Way of Water — must confront amid their larger war over Pandora with the colonizing forces of the Resources Development Administration.

The sequel will find Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña reprising their roles as Sully and Neytiri, while other returning cast members include Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Jack Champion, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, and Kate Winslet. It will feature new cast members Oona Chaplin, Michelle Yeoh, and David Thewlis.

Cameron filmed Fire and Ash back-to-back with The Way of Water, hence the three-year wait between sequels (the gap between the original Avatar and The Way of Water was 13 years). Two more Avatar films are in the works, with the fourth installment set to arrive in 2029 and the fifth in 2031.

Speaking with Rolling Stone earlier this year, Cameron said, “I’ve justified making Avatar movies to myself for the last 20 years, not based on how much money we made, but on the basis that hopefully it can do some good, it can help connect us, it can help connect us to our lost aspect of ourself that connects with nature and respects nature and all those things. So do I think that movies are the answer to our human problems? No, I think they’re limited because people sometimes just want entertainment, and they don’t want to be challenged in that way. I think Avatar is a Trojan horse strategy that gets you into a piece of entertainment, but then works on your brain and your heart a little bit in a way.”
