Miley Cyrus wrote new song Secrets as a “peace offering” for her father Billy Ray Cyrus.
The popstar dropped the deluxe version of her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, on Friday.
Miley also unveiled the bonus track Secrets, which she recorded with former Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham, and an accompanying music video.
Taking to Instagram, the Flowers hitmaker described how she was inspired to write the song amid her reconciliation with Billy, with whom she had been estranged for several years.
“This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved. In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same,” she wrote. “Thank you to Lindsey Buckingham & Mick Fleetwood for bringing magic to the music.”
To conclude, the 32-year-old added: “This song is for my dad.”
In August, Billy shared a preview of Secrets via his Instagram account and revealed that Miley had sent him the track as a gift for his 64th birthday.
And speaking about the song during an appearance on the Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky podcast in June, the singer reflected on how she navigated some difficult emotions while penning the personal track.
“I wrote this song about my dad, because I wanted him to tell me, even though they were secrets, even though I didn’t really wanna know, I wanted to be the one he felt safe enough to tell me the things that were damning and damaging to the family,” she stated. “But I wanted him to think that, as a middle child, I’m old enough that I could take some of that, you know. And I always wanted my family to feel like I was the safe place, that I always had the white flag when they came to talk to me.”
