MisterWives graced The Green Room stage, on Saturday, October 5th, to kick off Austin’s biggest annual music festival. “This is definitely the nicest green room we have been in, by a lot,” Mandy Lee declared. Lee, who is the frontwoman of MisterWives, sat alongside her four bandmates, looking out onto the South Congress Hotel event space, flooded with Texas cacti and dressed in PATRÓN Tequila-themed installations. “I’ve been in much smaller ones,” William Hehir, bassist, confirmed, laughing in awe at The Green Room’s charm.
Typically, The Green Room is reserved as an exclusive backstage haven for artists. However, PATRÓN Tequila and Rolling Stone’s The Green Room event granted fans an exclusive opportunity to get up close and personal with their favorite artists, for a once-in-a-lifetime look behind the scenes. Needless to say, guests were not disappointed, as the performance by MisterWives blew all expectations out of the water.
Prior to their performance, MisterWives joined Rolling Stone News Supervising Producer, Delisa Shannon, for an exclusive interview. During the conversation, they sipped PATRÓN Ranch Water cocktails, spoke candidly of the band’s longstanding history and shared exciting plans for the future.
The Green Room performance kicked off MisterWives’ Just For One Night Tour!, which will be their last for a while, after a ten year run of touring. The band, who formed in 2012, is looking forward to taking a much-needed break and celebrating a decade of hard work on the road. “The rug could be pulled from underneath you at any point in time, and so everything is something to celebrate,” Hehir mentions, explaining the importance of recognizing milestones like this tour. “You never know if it’s going to happen again and you can’t take it for granted when it does.”
Because of the significance of this tour, MisterWives decided to shake up the set list. For the first time, the band invites fans into the process of song selection. “We’ve not stopped for ten years, so we wanted to bring all the fans in so they could vote on [songs] we wouldn’t typically play, in this cycle for the new album, and get to cover our whole catalog,” Lee said. This method has clearly proved effective, as Green Room guests found themselves nostalgically grooving to deep cuts, as well as learning about new tracks at Saturday’s performance. “It was really nice to see just the wide range of everybody’s favorites,” Lee admits.
While the band has grown since the writing of those first songs as teenagers, Lee feels it’s nice to see how much those lyrics mean to others, and is happy to pay homage to her sixteen year old self. “It’s nice to honor, you know, sixteen year old Mandy,” said Lee.
One could only imagine how proud that sixteen year old would be of her older self, as she stormed The Green Room’s stage, showcasing her endless vocal range, while kicking and shaking it in a stylish plaid skirt. Ending the set, the band raised their PATRÓN cocktails to the crowd, toasting to the unforgettable set, as Lee hopped into the audience to sing and dance with the very fans that made this childhood dream a reality.
