Moliy says she was ready for her music to be “heard in the club” and places that people want to “party”.

The Ghanaian singer – known for her distinctive blend of Afrobeats, R ‘n’ B, and alté – took the world by storm with her viral breakout hit Shake it to the Max, released earlier in January. The track peaked at No. 12 on the Official Singles Chart and earned her second Silver certification in the UK, cementing her place in the global Afro-fusion scene.

The African breakout star reveals she was ready to showcase the fun side of Ghana with a club-heavy banger.

Speaking exclusively to Bang Showbiz at the Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with Barclaycard on Saturday night (06.12.25) at the O2, she said, Moliy, 24, said: “A lot of my older music, because I have a lot of projects that are part of this, it’s been more mellow, more lover girl, more chill, there’s been some attitude and body-ness involved, but this time I was like ‘no, I really want to be heard in the club, I really want to be heard at festivals, I really want to be heard at places that people want to party and have a great time’. So this is the music I am trying to make now.

Ghana is very active, our culture there, I’m like baby you need to come through. My music is just a great representation of the fun we like to have.”

Moliy, born Molly Ama Montgomery, is noted for her introspective songwriting which often explores themes of identity.

Ghana’s rising star is passionate about using her platform to showcase African talent.

She said: “I think it’s very important, there is a lot of undiscovered talent waiting for the world to hear, you only hear what’s super popular and I think I’m one of the artists that many people would not have expected to be heard by everyone.

“I know there is more of me and Ghana so I think the fact that I am here and the fact that I am representing. It opens more doors for artists like me to showcase their sound and be discovered.”

With Afro House gaining momentum and making its mark on the global stage – thanks to artists like South-African DJ Black Coffee leading the charge – Moliy is excited to see the genre flourish.

She said: “I think it’s exciting, I could see the trajectory three years ago, I could see what was happening. I can see that … the fact that artists from Africa can be global and achieve certain things, that means that a lot more of us can actually do this.”

Looking to the future, the Sad Girlz Luv Money hitmaker would love to collab with Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Wizkid.

She said: “I’d love to work with Wiz Kid, I think he’s awesome.”
