It’s been more than sixteen years since My Chemical Romance dropped their fourth album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, the 2010 release that, for now, served as their recorded swan song.
Since then, the group has gone radio silent on new music, though they reunited for a 2017 tour and released the one-off new single “The Foundations of Decay” in 2022. They’ve been on a two-year swing of dates around the world celebrating their most beloved album, 2006’s The Black Parade, and on Friday (Oct. 16) they surprised fans with the streaming debut of the blistering, previously unreleased song “Someone Out There Loves You (Live From Hoboken).”
The track appears on the upcoming The Black Parade (20th Anniversary) expanded edition — due out on Oct. 23 — with the accompanying video (see below) capturing the emo rock legends in top form during a show at their 200-capacity hometown Hoboken, N.J. club Maxwell’s in 2007.
The reissue features the entire original album, which spun off the hit title track, “Welcome to the Black Parade,” the highest-charting single from the group to date, which hit No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 2006.
It is one of six bonus tracks on the expanded edition, including two more live tracks from that Hoboken show, “Dead!” and “The Sharpest Lives,” which have not been released on LP, CD or streaming to date, as well as three fan-favorite B-sides that have previously been available as B-sides on older releases, “Heaven Help Us,” “Kill All Your Friends” and “My Way Home Is Through You.”
“Twenty years ago, we wrote what would become The Black Parade, our third record and the follow-up to Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge,” the band said in a statement. “At the time, we could never have imagined what the record would mean for the band. All we knew is that we had made something crazy, and something we couldn’t wait to get it out into the world… For the first time, we have included everything we finished during those sessions in a single collection.”
“Someone Out There Loves You” is classic Black Parade-era MCR, featuring that album’s signature blend of punk/emo energy and pop songwriting chops and an urgent, yelping chorus on which singer Gerard Way wails, “And would you stay right here/ Then I’ll tell you/ That someone out there loves you/ If you stay right here/ Then I’ll tell you/ That someone out there loves you after all.”
MCR will mount a grand finale for the U.S. leg of their Black Parade 2026 tour with a five-night run at the Hollywood Bowl beginning on Oct. 21 and culminating on Halloween night (Oct. 31).
Though fans will have to make due with the unearthed bonus single for now, Way hinted that the band may be gearing up to record their first new album in 15 years at the Sept. 12 Black Parade show at San Antonio’s Alamodome. “Just know that, like, we’ve kind of really always wanted to make another record, so we hope that life allows us to do that,” he said. “Cause you guys, honestly, you guys kept us alive so long. You guys deserve another record. I don’t know when it’ll be. But it’ll be awesome.”
