The hunt is officially back on. Netflix has confirmed a sequel to its cultural phenomenon KPop Demon Hunters, the streaming platform’s most-watched movie of all time. The announcement comes at a pinnacle moment for the franchise, as critics and fans alike anticipate the film’s performance at the Oscars tonight, where it is nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.

The original film, which follows the trio Rumi, Mira, and Zoey of the fictional group Huntr/x, has shattered records since its release last summer. With over 480 million views in just six months, it has become a rare crossover hit, bridging the gap between K-pop fandom and mainstream Western audiences.

The film’s soundtrack has been equally dominant. The breakout hit “Golden” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and secured a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media—marking the first time a K-pop track has ever won the prestigious award.

The sequel will be the first project under an exclusive multi-year deal with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this story and these characters,” Kang stated. “There is so much more to this world we have built; this is only the beginning.”

While Netflix has yet to provide a release date or specific plot details, the creative team is already looking to evolve the sound and scope of the sequel. Ejae, the singer behind Rumi’s voice and co-writer of “Golden,” expressed hopes to showcase a broader range of Korean musical styles. Music producer Zhun also intends to build on the high-energy fusion of visual elements and sound that defined the first installment.

As the “KPop Demon Hunters” sequel enters development, all eyes are on the Academy Awards. Competing against heavyweights like Disney’s Zootopia 2, the film’s potential win would cement its legacy as a critical and commercial powerhouse. For now, fans can celebrate the return of the demon-slaying pop stars to their screens in the near future.
