Noel Gallagher has admitted that he “couldn’t believe” it when he saw members of the England squad singing Oasis’ Wonderwall following a World Cup win.
The Oasis star was reacting to the England team celebrating their 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas, Texas, last week, during which the 1995 classic rang out around the stadium.
As the crowd joined in, England players including Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon were seen singing along, with several squad members mouthing the lyrics on the pitch in a moment that quickly went viral.
The emotional moment has also boosted the song’s popularity, with Wonderwall reportedly seeing a 50 per cent rise in U.K. streams on Spotify.
During an interview with talkSport on Thursday, Noel revealed that he was taken aback by the moment.
“Do you know what, I thought it was a great moment,” he shared. “I couldn’t actually believe what I was seeing. Like I said to the people from The Sun, that song belongs to the people.”
Noel also admitted he was particularly surprised that England midfielder Bellingham knew all the words.
“I’m staggered that Jude Bellingham knows the lyrics, but it’s one of those songs,” he commented.
Elsewhere in the interview, Noel was asked about the royalties the track generates from its continued global popularity, to which he replied, “It’s an extraordinary amount of money.”
Pressed on how much he would earn from talkSPORT playing the song during the segment, he joked, “About eight-and-a-half quid.”
“It’s being played all over the world, somewhere, right now,” he continued. “Apart from North Korea.”
His comments come after his brother and Oasis co-frontman Liam Gallagher also reacted online to claims that Wonderwall had become England’s “unofficial World Cup anthem”, writing, “And rightly so it’s a f**king classic and I sound BIBLICAL on it.”
