Norah Jones is working on original songs for a stage musical adaptation of Practical Magic.

On Monday, producers announced that a musical version of the 1998 film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, based on the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman, is in development.

Dogfight playwright Peter Duchan is penning the book with Hoffman, while Jones and record producer Gregg Wattenberg are collaborating on the music and lyrics.

Merrily We Roll Along director Maria Friedman is attached to helm the project.

Jones has not yet commented on the news, but she re-shared a post promoting Practical Magic as a “spellbinding new musical” via Instagram.

“Belladonna and the rose. Secrets only sisters know. Our shared craft now turns a page. Something’s brewing for the stage,” the message reads.

The adaptation will mark the first time Jones has worked on a musical.

The Come Away with Me hitmaker released her ninth studio album, Visions, in 2024.

And Hoffman is thrilled to be bringing her story to the stage.

“I’m so excited to be working with my amazing collaborators on bringing Practical Magic to the stage,” she praised in a statement to Deadline. “This story of love and sisterhood is meant for the theatre. Music is the heart and soul of Practical Magic, you can hear it as you read the book, even though it isn’t there. Now you will finally hear the story as I always imagined it. You will hear magic.”

Casting and a potential run date have not yet been announced.

Directed by Griffin Dunne, the Practical Magic film saw Bullock and Kidman play Sally and Gillian Owens, who were descended from a long line of witches. Raised by their aunts, the sisters are taught the uses of practical magic as they grow up.

They recently reunited for a sequel, which is slated for release in September 2026.
