In the biggest Best of British countdown in the station’s history, Radio X listeners have spoken: Oasis remains the undisputed heavyweight of British music. Their 1994 seminal hit ‘Live Forever’ has claimed the #1 spot for the fourth consecutive year, buoyed by the momentum of the band’s massive 2025 reunion tour.

A Landmark Countdown

This year, Radio X expanded its traditional Top 100 to an ambitious Top 500, incorporating tracks from its expanded network, including Radio X Classic Rock and its decade-specific stations. The result is a definitive snapshot of the UK’s musical DNA.

“This year feels extra special,” said Matt Deverson, Managing Editor of Radio X. “For the first time, listeners have ranked 500 songs, creating a landmark countdown that celebrates the lasting influence of British music.”

The Top Tier and Emotional Tributes

While Oasis dominated the top five with ‘Live Forever,’ ‘Slide Away’ (#4), and ‘Champagne Supernova’ (#5), Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ secured second place for the third year running. Third place went to The Stone Roses’ ‘I Am The Resurrection,’ a poignant climb that served as a tribute to the band’s bassist, Mani, who passed away in November.

The expanded list also allowed for a surge in rock legacy. Following the death of Ozzy Osbourne last year, the “Prince of Darkness” made the Top 100 for the first time with Black Sabbath’s ‘Paranoid’ (#69), while solo tracks ‘Crazy Train’ and ‘Mama I’m Coming Home’ also made the 500.

The Power of the ’90s

Nostalgia for “Cool Britannia” shows no signs of fading. Over 26% of the list originated in the 1990s, proving the enduring grip of Britpop. Geographically, London led the pack with 148 songs, followed by Manchester with 91.

Representing the new generation, Wolf Alice made a massive impact. Fresh off their BRIT Award win for Group of the Year, their track ‘The Sofa’ debuted at #21, the highest-placed new release in the entire 500.

The full Radio X Best of British 500 list is available now on Global Player.
