Olivia Rodrigo achieves career-best opening week as new album clinches Number 1

Pop superstar Olivia Rodrigo has secured the biggest opening week of her career as her third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, effortlessly clinches the Number 1 spot on the UK Official Albums Chart.

According to data from the Official Charts Company, the album shifted an explosive 103,000 chart units in its first week. This staggering debut comfortably surpasses the opening week metrics of her previous global juggernauts, with 2021’s SOUR pulling in 51,000 units and 2023’s GUTS landing 60,000 units.

At just 23 years old, Rodrigo has also made chart history. She is now the youngest international artist to break the 100,000 UK album sales barrier during a release week in more than two decades, a milestone last achieved by Britney Spears in 2004 with Greatest Hits: My Prerogative.

“Thank you so much for this Number 1 album award! It means so much to me,” Rodrigo said, celebrating her historic hat-trick of chart-topping LPs. “I wrote so many of these songs in the UK, so it makes it extra special. Thank you all for listening, I appreciate it so much. I can’t wait to put this on my mantle!”

Beyond the main chart victory, the record marks the biggest first week for any international album release in the UK this year, simultaneously topping the Official Record Store Chart and the Official Album Vinyl Chart.

It was a dynamic week across the rest of the billboard. Yorkshire rock outfit Embrace celebrated their first album in four years, Avalanche, entering at Number 5 to secure the band’s sixth Top 5 accolade. Meanwhile, as his massive Wembley Stadium residency continues alongside a recent intimate Meltdown Festival set, Harry Styles saw a major resurgence across the charts, with Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. climbing to Number 3.

Further down the rankings, Canadian duo Angine De Poitrine achieved a double Top 40 presence with physical releases of Vol. II and Vol. I, while Australian DJ Sonny Fodera earned his first Top 20 album placing with can we do it all again?.
