Olivia Rodrigo fans hit out at Cigarettes After Sex drummer’s “weird” comment about her all-female festival

Cigarettes After Sex drummer Jacob Tomsky has faced criticism for comments he’s made about Olivia Rodrigo‘s new all-female festival.

The pop star announced the event, called Daisy Chain Fields, earlier this week, saying: “I’ve had a dream of doing this festival for years and I am so ecstatic it’s finally coming true!!”

Set to take place at Great Park in Irvine, California, on August 29, the one-dayer boasts acts such as Chappell Roan, Bikini Kill, Doechii, Garbage, Stevie Nicks and Karen O. Rodrigo will herself perform at the festival, too.

“Daisy Chain Fields features an all-women lineup and 100 per cent of the net proceeds will go to charities dedicated to advancing and advocating for women and girls,” the singer continued.

But the video of Rodrigo’s interview with Good Morning America, in which she launched the event, appeared to confuse musician Tomsky.

In a since-deleted comment on a TikTok clip of Rodrigo’s chat, the drummer wrote: “We won’t be there lol tf.”

A user on the social media platform later asked him to explain the meaning behind his remark. Tomsky responded: “I mean, it feels like some forced promo for a festival, right? I’m just saying our band won’t be performing there.”

Cigarettes After Sex were not mentioned during Rodrigo’s conversation with GMA, nor were they featured anywhere in the announcement materials.

It remains unclear as to why Tomsky has seemingly taken issue with Daisy Chain Fields. However, some Rodrigo fans have perceived his comments to mean that he is unhappy with the all-female aspect of the festival.

“Men being offended by something that doesn’t involve them is straight up comedy fr,” one person wrote on X/Twitter. Others said that Tomsky’s remark was “misogynistic” and “weird”, while someone else wrote: “Ermmmm I don’t think he was invited anyway!”

Elsewhere, a fan said (via The Independent): “‘Forced ad’ and you’re commenting on a video you could’ve skipped, on a social media account you control, on a phone YOU pay for. So that was a choice to watch.”

A user also pointed out that “all festivals cater to men” and said line-ups were “about 80 per cent male”, adding: “Let us have this one thing!”

Someone on Reddit suggested that there must be “a better explanation” for Tomsky’s comment, saying it was “just completely out of place linguistically”.

“There is a big hate train out for him right now, fans rightfully getting defensive at a perceived slight, but I cannot even grasp the intention of his comment,” they continued.

Meanwhile, Cigarettes After Sex frontman Greg Gonzalez has distanced himself from his bandmate’s remarks on Instagram Stories. “Only complete adoration from me,” he wrote over a screenshot of him streaming Rodrigo’s song ‘Good 4 U’, followed by a black heart emoji.

Tomsky has not elaborated on his comments, at the time of writing, and Rodrigo is yet to respond.

On Cigarettes After Sex’s subreddit, a fan said they were “confused” over the drummer’s apparent dig. Another user wrote: “Douche chill!”

Rodrigo has discussed the inspiration behind Daisy Chain Fields, explaining: “When I pictured this festival, I had an image in my head of girls sitting underneath a tree, like, making little daisy chains or flower crowns or friendship bracelets.

“I also just like the idea of a daisy chain, how we can all be individual links in this chain that is larger than the individual.”

She has also teased a potential duet with Stevie Nicks on Fleetwood Mac‘s classic track ‘Landslide’.

Rodrigo released her third studio album, ‘You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love’, earlier this month. In a glowing, four-and-a-half-star review, NME described the record as “a bittersweet, cinematic odyssey from a generational talent”.

The star has discussed the female influences on the record, citing Alanis Morissette’s ‘Jagged Little Pill’ and Bikini Kill as having made an impact on her writing. She is also a longtime fan of No Doubt and appeared at their final Las Vegas Sphere show recently.
