Olivia Rodrigo says new album is about the “jealousy” and “longing” from her first “big girl” relationship

Olivia Rodrigo has shared more insight into what to expect from her forthcoming album, sharing that it is centred around the feelings of “jealousy” and “longing” that arose from her first “big girl relationship”.

Speculation about new music from the singer started rising last month, when cryptic pink album teasers were discovered by fans in Los Angeles and London.

She then announced that her third studio album, ‘You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love’, is set to arrive via Geffen on June 12 and added that it would be “experimental” and full of “sad love songs”.

It is the follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2021 debut album ‘Sour’ and the highly-praised follow-up, ‘Guts’, which dropped in 2023. Since then, the singer has played countless huge headline shows, including her Pyramid Stage headline set at Glastonbury 2025, where she brought out The Cure’s Robert Smith as a special guest.

Now, Rodrigo has shared more details about what fans can expect from the album, and said that it is majorly inspired by her first “big girl relationship” and tackles the sense of jealousy that arises when you’re deeply committed to someone.

“I think the challenge for me was to write songs about romantic love positively,” she explained in a new interview with Audacy Check In.

“I think when I set out to write this album, I was really in love – sort of my first ‘big girl’ relationship – [and] writing a song about happiness is a lot harder than writing a song about heartbreak.

“It was sort of challenging myself to make a love song and also talk about some of the more negative feelings that go along with being in romantic relationships, like longing and yearning and jealousy and missing your partner when they’re away.”

While the ‘Deja Vu’ singer didn’t reveal any details about her partner, she has been romantically linked to actor Louis Partridge since 2023.

The comments align with what she told British Vogue about how she was most inspired by love songs that have a “tinge of fear or yearning in them”.

With the album set to drop in June, Rodrigo has so far shared the lead single ‘Drop Dead’, debuted it live during Addison Rae’s set at Coachella and later performed it at a surprise appearance at a New York City open mic event.

Since then, she has held an intimate, invite-only, phone-free show at LA’s The Echo on Friday night (April 25) where she shared a taste of the album’s next single which appears to feature Weyes Blood, and also been spotted having dinner with Geese frontman Cameron Winter (via Dork) – sparking rumours they could be collaborating on the new record.

In addition to citing The Cure a source of inspiration for album three, Rodrigo has also said that she has been enjoying work from the likes of New Order and Joy Division, as well as The White Stripes and Bikini Kill.

In 2023, she said that her parents’ love of The Cure and Depeche mode had rubbed off on her, and also told NME in 2021 that it was her mum and dad who shaped her approach to music with their own tastes.

“I love pop-punk music; I love grunge music; I love country music and folk music,” she explained at the time. “I think, honestly, you can see little influences of all of those genres in my album [‘Sour’].”
