The musician revealed that she went to the hospital to make sure that she didn’t have a concussion and ended up drawing a connection between her nurse and her late grandfather
For Olivia Rodrigo, everything happens for a reason — even when you take a brutal plunge into an open hole on the stage of your world tour. Earlier this month, the musician fell through a stage trap door during her concert in Melbourne, Australia. Rodrigo watched the viral moment back during her recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and detailed the subsequent precautionary hospital visit that changed her perspective on it.
“It was actually kind of a beautiful thing and I’m really happy it happened in hindsight,” she said. “That was my next stop — Australia after the Philippines. I was thinking about my family and my heritage and my relatives. And I feel and I was all shaken up. I went to the hospital after, nothing happened but they just wanted to make sure I didn’t have a concussion. And randomly, the nurse was a Filipino man with the same name as my grandpa who just passed away a few months ago. I was like, wow, that was him looking out for me and making sure I didn’t get hurt. I’m really happy it happened.”
Rodrigo’s performance at the Philippine Arena in Manila was the biggest of her career, but also the most meaningful. It was her first visit to the country and she arranged for all of the tickets to be priced affordably for her fans there and performed for more than 50,000 people. Once she headed to Australia, she completed eight more shows to officially close out the Guts world tour after 95 performances.
“I think it’s the end of the Guts era! I love this era so much. It was so much fun to get to create and share with the fans,” Rodrigo recently told Rolling Stone. “I’m so grateful that fans have embraced Guts in the way that they have. I felt so much pressure after Sour to make something that could follow it up, and that was a really daunting task. I’m proud of the album, and I’m really proud of the musical elements that we explored and so proud of it lyrically. The fact that people have embraced it the way that they have just means so much to me, and I’m really excited for a break and for what’s to come.”
