Olivia Rodrigo has officially released her new song, Serena Joy, on streaming services.
On Monday, the Drop Dead singer announced that the track is now available to download, with some of the proceeds benefiting her Daisy Chain Fields Fund, which supports nonprofit organisations such as Baby2Baby, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, and the Center for Reproductive Rights, among others.
“Surprise!!!” she captioned an image of the lyrics on her Instagram. “Serena Joy out on streaming platforms now. A portion of all net proceeds go to the Daisy Chain Fields Fund. I love this song so much!!!!”
Last week, the owners of the Analog Record Shop in Orange County, California revealed that Olivia had given them 500 CD units of the song ahead of the launch of her Daisy Chain Fields festival.
“More than anything, we’re grateful for what this represents: An artist building a stage for women in music and raising funds for women and girls,” they commented. “An artist willing to support a local independent record store. And a hometown getting to be part of something really special. That means a lot to us.”
It’s believed the song is named after Serena Joy, a character in Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, The Handmaid’s Tale.
In June, Olivia revealed that she decided against including the track in her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
“I actually really love (Serena Joy). It didn’t fit on the album,” the 23-year-old told Etalk. “The record was very much a chronicle of a relationship – beginning, middle, and end. But I hope that it’ll be a part of something else down the line.”
The Daisy Chain Fields festival is set to take place at Great Park in Irvine, California on Saturday.
In addition to Olivia, other artists who have signed up to perform include Chappell Roan, Doechii, Katseye, Mitski, the Breeders, Die Spitz, Bikini Kill, Garbage, Quiet Light, Rachel Chinouriri, Santigold, and Not for Radio.
Karen O, Stevie Nicks, and Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan will serve as special guests.
