Spotify is now allowing parents to exclude their kids’ music choices from their Wrapped. Find out all the details below.
The streaming platform is now giving parents the ability to exclude music for children from their own music recommendations, with a new feature that encourages subscribers to “Keep your recommendations yours.”
“Parents love using Spotify to play music for their families. But parents don’t always share the same taste as their young children,” the company noted in an announcement.
The new ability rolled out globally earlier this month to Free and Premium users. When you turn the setting off, “you can still search for, listen to, and build playlists of kids and family music — but those streams won’t affect what Spotify suggests for you,” says Spotify. “That means experiences like Discover Weekly, Daily Mix, and Wrapped more accurately reflect your taste.” The feature also applies retroactively, so kids’ music you’ve already listened to won’t be factored into your Wrapped top song or artist, for example.
Kids and family music on Spotify includes, according to the company: animated and live-action film soundtracks; theme songs and music from family TV shows; music from family entertainment brands and characters; family-friendly covers of popular songs; nursery rhymes and lullabies; sing-along, educational and activity music; and novelty and parody tracks for families.
The new feature is “the latest step in our ongoing efforts to give parents and guardians more control over how they and their kids listen,” the company says.
In other news, back in August Spotify announced that it will be introducing a new labelling system, so that users can quickly identify artists and content generated by AI.
While Spotify is helping label AI profiles and remove AI spam on the platform, in May it also announced that it has signed a new deal with Universal Music Group (UMG) that will allow fans to reimagine songs with AI.
Lorde hit out at a the feature, saying that the public “don’t want this”.
A number of artists have boycotted the streaming service, with Massive Attack vowing that their new material shall never be released on it. The trip-hop icons’ dispute with Spotify emerged when they revealed that they had asked their label UMG to remove their music from the platform, following reports that former CEO Daniel Ek had led a €600million (£524million) investment into Helsing, a Munich-based company creating drones and artificial intelligence for military operations.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard also pulled their music from the streaming platform as a result, in a bid to “put pressure on these Dr. Evil tech bros to do better”, while the Sabres Of Paradise removed their music from Spotify due to its “financial ties to AI-driven weapon technologies”.
Other artists made similar moves to remove their work from Spotify, including Deerhoof, Wu Lyf, Xiu Xiu and many more.
Last September, Ek announced that he would be stepping down as CEO on January 1, 2026, with Spotify co-presidents Alex Norström and Gustav Söderström set to take his place.
