Peter Hook dedicates Joy Division’s Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction to Ian Curtis, says “I will see you the night” – but will New Order attend?

Peter Hook has dedicated Joy Division’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame to Ian Curtis, and confirmed that he’ll be attending the ceremony.

Joy Division and New Order will enter the Rock Hall as a single act during a ceremony in Los Angeles in November, following previous nominations in 2023, 2025 and 2026.

A record-breaking six British acts have been announced for this year’s edition, also including Oasis, Billy Idol and Sade. They appear in the ‘Performer’ category alongside Luther Vandross, Wu-Tang Clan and more.

Hook – who played bass with Joy Division until they became New Order when Ian Curtis took his own life in 1980, before parting ways with the band in 2007 – has now responded to the prestigious nod on social media.

“Hi. I’d just like to say how wonderfully pleased I am to be finally accepted into the Cleveland Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame,” the musician said in a video, while wearing an Oasis T-shirt.

“I’ve been looking forward to it for years, so I definitely am gonna make the most of it. I’d like to say that this is for Ian Curtis, and for all our fans of both bands. Without you, we would be nothing. So thank you so much.”

Hook signed off by telling viewers: “I will see you on the night.” In the caption, he wrote: “What an honour – thank you! See you at the ceremony…” It is not yet known whether the current members of New Order will be in attendance, too.

The bassist quit New Order due to friction with his bandmates, and there had also been a legal row over royalties. Last year, Hook said there was still “animosity” with the group, which he called a “bad cover version” band.

Speaking to NME last year about not being inducted to the Rock Hall in 2025, the bassist that the current rift between himself and his former bandmates is the reason for their snub.

“You’re in a weird situation here, because the camps don’t have any communication and actively don’t like each other,” he said. “When it comes to working on these things, you have to let your fans know that they can vote you in. That’s how it’s done – it’s not given to you. You have to be nominated and voted for.

“If you check our campaign last time and compare it to the campaign this time, you can see there’s been – shall we say – a lack of enthusiasm on one side for the whole thing. Obviously they’re making enough money pretending to be New Order so they don’t have to worry about it. So that’s cool, isn’t it?”

When asked if he’d gladly attend the Hall Of Fame ceremony with his ex-bandmates, should they be inducted in the future, Hook joked at the time: “Well, they offered to put a boxing ring in for us. I’m looking forward to it, to be honest.”

He told NME: “Just so you know, I’ve done a talk at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. It was very good and they’re lovely people. A very good friend of mine has a display there of all New Order memorabilia. We’re actually actively in [The Hall Of Fame], shall we say.

“It’s voted for by the music-liking people of whoever ties into this. The problem, shall we say, is the relationship between the two halves.”

He also spoke about “Twatface [New Order frontman Bernard Sumner] turning up to get the Icon Award” at the 2024 Rolling Stone UK Awards on behalf of the group, “and neither the band or the awards told me they were getting it – which is a bit of a pisser.”

“I think it’s fantastic. Anyone who appreciates your music – whether it’s now or 50 years ago when we started – is absolutely fine by me,” Hook told NME. “Let’s face it, it makes you smile and it keeps you going through a very difficult world! It’s fucking fantastic when anyone offers you a compliment like that. The problem is that if you look on New Order and Joy Division’s socials (which is also controlled by them three…), they didn’t do very much to push it, particularly this time.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Hook explained that he and his ex-bandmates were “hundreds of miles apart”, but added: “The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is different, but I think it’s because they don’t even want to have to consider that they might have to meet or get together.

“The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame have had a chequered history of get-togethers on stage. What do they say? No publicity is bad publicity? I’m very much of that mindset. I suspect that’s why the others aren’t pushing it.”

In 2023, Hook explained that the joint Rock Hall nomination for Joy Division and New Order that year could be an “olive branch” for his estranged bandmates “that we may need to end the injustices”. Hook said that the first nod had “made me smile all day”.

These “injustices” Hook alluded to a fallout more than a decade ago when Sumner, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert reformed New Order without him following four-year hiatus in 2011.

In 2020, Hook said: “I defy any human being not to bear a grudge. If wasn’t for the wife, I’d probably be in prison now.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 2026 induction ceremony is set to take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Saturday November 14. A recording will then air in December on ABC and Disney+.
