Peter Hook says Joy Division’s Rock Hall honour is ‘for Ian Curtis’

Peter Hook says Joy Division’s Rock Hall honour is ‘for Ian Curtis’

Peter Hook has said Joy Division’s place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is “for Ian Curtis,” dedicating the honour to the band’s late frontman as he confirmed he will attend this year’s ceremony.

The 70-year-old bassist shared a video message on Instagram wearing an Oasis T-shirt — the Britpop group are also being inducted — and thanked fans for helping secure the long-awaited recognition.

He said: “I’d like to say that this is for Ian Curtis, and for all our fans of both bands. Without you, we would be nothing.”

Ian tragically took his own life in 1980, aged just 23.

The induction comes after years of discussion about why Joy Division and New Order had not yet been recognised by the Hall.

Speaking in a 2025 interview with NME, Peter said the delay has been influenced by the division between the two camps.

He explained that while memorabilia from New Order is already displayed at the Hall, the voting process relies heavily on fan engagement — something he believes had been affected by the long-running split.

He said: “You’re in a weird situation here, because the camps don’t have any communication and actively don’t like each other.

“If you check our campaign last time and compare it to the campaign this time, you can see there’s been a lack of enthusiasm on one side.”

Peter played with Joy Division until Ian’s death in 1980, after which the remaining members formed New Order.

He left the band in 2007, triggering years of legal battles over royalties, touring income and the use of the New Order name.

The dispute eventually reached the High Court before a confidential settlement was reached in 2017.

Asked whether he would appear alongside New Order if they were inducted in the future, Peter joked that organisers had “offered to put a boxing ring in for us.”

New Order and Joy Division are being recognised by the Hall as one act.

They were previously nominated in 2023 and 2025.

It’s not yet known if the other members – including Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris – will attend the ceremony in Los Angeles on November 14.

Oasis, Iron Maiden, Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Sade, Luther Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan are also part of the class of 2026.
