Phoebe Bridgers leads fans around roller-skating rink at ‘Lost Weekend’ listening party

Phoebe Bridgers led fans around a roller-skating rink at a recent ‘Lost Weekend’ listening party.

The singer-songwriter’s third studio album arrived on Friday (August 14), and before then, she spent time with fans at a listening party held at the Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale on Tuesday night (August 11), in what was a triumphant outing not just for her latest release, but also her skating skills.

As one fan wrote on Reddit after the event: “She was skating right with everyone, and if you could match her speed then you could say hello, but she is FAST so it may have been a bit difficult.”

Her speed seemed slightly incongruous to the sound of the 16-track offering, which NME described as ‘candid [and] gut-punching”, and Bridgers herself did acknowledge there was a “weird” juxtaposition there.

“I’ve had this idea forever” she said to the crowd of about 200 sitting on the rink’s floor for a Q&A, per Variety. “I always thought it would be cool to do like a Grouper Moonlight night. You always kind of skate to ABBA or something. I thought it would be interesting to listen to sad and slow songs and skate.”

Bridgers has done no interviews in the lead-up to the record’s release, but shed some light on its creation while briefly chatting to fans. “There’s a movie called Lost Weekend that’s about alcoholics’ kind of fugue state,” she said when one asked what range of media had inspired it. “That probably goes well, unfortunately.”

Another asked why she chose to do the intimate pop-up tour, to which she replied: “I just wanted everything with this album to feel like it’s happening in real life. Like, I didn’t live through a time where I didn’t find out about something on the internet. Even cool pop-up shows and stuff, it was all kind of phone-based.

“So I just liked the idea of plastering a small town [with posters]. It was so fun.”

Prior to the Q&A, Bridgers shared a rough cut of a video, ‘I Can’t Wait’, which was nearly done, but would later have drone footage from the skating event added to it.

As for other events in the pipeline for Bridgers, she recently announced some intimate phone-free shows in the UK to mark the release of the new album. After those shows next week, she’ll then head out on ‘The Lost Tour’, kicking off in North America next month before heading to the UK and Europe in November and December.

The UK and Ireland dates include shows at Dublin’s 3Arena, Manchester’s Co-op Live and London’s The O2. Find any remaining tickets here (UK and Ireland) and here (North America).

In NME’s five-star review of ‘Lost Weekend’, Erica Campbell described the record as “the opposite of emotional evasion: more a reckoning with herself and the romantic and familial love and loss that have shaped her story and storytelling.

“It’s a feat that could only be achieved by a songwriter and musician self-assured in their penmanship and musicality, someone who may have started the journey of writing her third album feeling lost, but by the end wasn’t unmoored at all.”
