Phoebe Green announces new album ‘Premature Nostalgia’ with dizzying single ‘There’s Always Someone Kicking The Seat’

Phoebe Green has announced her new album ‘Premature Nostalgia’ with the dizzying and beautiful single ‘There’s Always Someone Kicking The Seat’.

The Manchester singer-songwriter will release the follow-up to her 2022 debut record ‘Lucky Me’ on October 2 via The Green Dream Machine/Absolute, and you can pre-order your copy here.

The album has been written and produced alongside her sister Lucy Green, aka Elucyve, and ‘There’s Always Someone Kicking The Seat’ gives fans their first taste of it. Over a frantically busy bed of electronic rhythms and effects, Green’s disaffected, cool spoke-sung delivery gives way to spectral, delicate vocals.

Listen to the single here:

Speaking about the song, Green has said: “We wanted this song to feel extremely visceral, as though the listener is experiencing the story firsthand; it was written in a similar way to ‘Reinvent’ lyrically where I just wanted to get an experience off my chest and melodically nothing fit, so I ended up just talking. It’s maybe my only proper break-up song, and Lucy really beautifully encapsulated the chaotic emotional journey sonically. It felt really fitting for the verses to feel quite matter of fact, recounting events, then melancholic choruses followed by a cathartic outro.”

She has also said that influences on ‘Premature Nostalgia’ include Jockstrap, James Blake, Imogen Heap and FKA Twigs, and has explained it will “explore my tendency to be extremely sentimental and attach value to every little thing – feeling nostalgic before a moment is even over and trying to control the grieving process by going through the motions prematurely in order to prepare myself”.

The album also contains a collaboration with Picture Parlour’s Katherine Parlour and makes use of field recordings captured from Manchester’s industrial landscape and club culture.

Phoebe Green – ‘Premature Nostalgia’ tracklist:

  1. ‘Showing Off’
  2. ‘There’s Always Someone Kicking The Seat’
  3. ‘I Don’t Play It Cool, I Play It Steaming’ (ft. Katherine Parlour)
  4. ‘Polluting You With Me’
  5. ‘Screen Glow Halo’
  6. ‘Clothes Still On’
  7. ‘Double Vodka Lemonade’
  8. ‘Pressing The Bruise’
  9. ‘Happy Birthday’
  10. ‘Silver’
  11. ‘Gum For The Aftertaste’

NME awarded her debut ‘Lucky Me’ four stars in 2022, writing: “On her debut album, Green finds power and release by marching to the beat of her own drum. By letting go of inhibition and surrendering to her musical instincts she’s created not just one unique sound, but worlds within worlds of indie pop brilliance.”
