The musicians performed the song at the Olympics Closing Ceremony in August
Phoenix have teamed up with DJ-producer Kavinsky and Belgian singer Angèle for a new rendition of “Nightcall,” which was recently reimagined by the French band live during the 2024 Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony.
The track was originally written by Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Kavinsky for the film Drive, released in 2010. The new version was produced by Phoenix and Kavinsky, and features vocals from Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars and Angèle. During the Olympics Closing Ceremony broadcast the broke a record for the most Shazams in a single day ever, reaching over a million.
Phoenix was selected to perform at the Stade de France during the Olympics finale. The band played several of their own hits, including “Lisztomania” and “If I Ever Feel Better,” and were later joined by fellow French band Air for “Playground Love.” Kavinsky and Angèle took the stage for “Nightcall” while Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend joined Phoenix for their collab “Tonight.”
“We are infinitely happy to have had the chance to celebrate with all the athletes and the entire world at the closing of the Olympic Games in our beloved city of Paris,” Phoenix said in a statement following their performance. “It was a wonderful moment to have been invited to take the stage with our friends from France and around the world, honoring the French spirit and remaining true to our motto: Liberté, Égalité, Phoenix! We are thrilled to both pass the baton to the Paralympics athletes and to Los Angeles for the forthcoming 2028 games.”
Phoenix’s most recent LP, Alpha Zulu, arrived in 2022. Last summer, the band and Beck released a collaboration titled “Odyssey” to coincide with their joint Summer Odyssey Tour.
