Rich Homie Quan has died at the age of 34, TMZ Hip Hop has confirmed.
The Atlanta rapper’s family told TMZ that he died today (September 5) at his home in the city, and that they are “shattered and heartbroken”. No cause of death has been confirmed.
Rich Homie Quan, real name Dequantes Lamar, rose to prominence in 2013 with the single ‘Type Of Way’, which reached Number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100, while his 2015 single ‘Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)’ peaked at Number 26.
Lamar was also known for being a key member of Rich Gang, a project from Cash Money Records, alongside Young Thug. The group hit Number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their 2014 track ‘Lifestyle’. He also collaborated with artists including Travis Scott, Kid Ink, Fetty Wap and Omarion.
Born in 1989, Lamar was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and said in a 2014 interview with XXL, “I never saw myself going this far with music. Music was just a hobby at first. I never saw myself being on stage and rocking out shows.”
Following the news of Lamar’s death, his fans rushed to pay tribute on social media. “Rich Homie Quan made my childhood years I can’t believe this,” said one, while another said, “This one is hitting us millennials hard. Rich Homie Quan is no longer with us and I’m in shock.”
