Rihanna has “so much” respect for Anna Wintour following news the fashion heavyweight is centering the 2025 Met Gala theme around Black dandyism.
Earlier this week it was announced Rihanna’s partner ASAP Rocky will co-chair the next New York fashion extravaganza, along with Pharrell Williams and actor and playwright Colman Domingo, as well as basketball legend LeBron James serving as honorary chair.
The annual event, a fundraising drive held for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan, is overseen by Vogue editor-in-chief Wintour with the 2025 theme recently announced as Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.
“This is probably one of my favourite themes of all of them, I’ve had tons of incredible themes with the Met ball that I enjoy but this one, it made me respect it so much more,” Rihanna, 36, gushed to Access Hollywood.
“It’s also a celebration of history and it’s just bringing it to the forefront on a platform where we’ve been kind of hidden and it’s just accepting it, like yeah! We got this! We’ve been doing this and now I’m excited to see Anna Wintour put that on the forefront, so much respect, I can’t wait to be there. I’m not going to miss this one.”
Next year’s gala will be held on 5 May, and will focus on the fashions of Black men and Black dandyism, inspired by guest curator Monica Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
