In a powerful tribute to Women’s History Month, BMI recently hosted an intimate musical celebration featuring the multi-talented singer, songwriter, and actress Rita Wilson. Held at BMI’s Los Angeles office on March 24, the event served as an exclusive first look at Wilson’s highly anticipated sixth studio album, Sound of a Woman, set for global release on May 1.

The afternoon was organized in a prestigious partnership with Women in Film and Universal Music Publishing, bringing together industry leaders to honor the creative contributions of women in the arts.

A Journey Through the “Sound of a Woman”

The centerpiece of the event was an in-depth Q&A session moderated by Kirsten Schaffer, CEO of Women in Film. Wilson took the audience behind the scenes of her new record, detailing the inspirations and emotional labor that fueled the songwriting process.

Described as a deeply personal body of work, Sound of a Woman reflects Wilson’s evolving identity as a musician. During the discussion, Wilson highlighted her commitment to authentic storytelling, a hallmark of her career that has transitioned seamlessly from the screen to the recording studio.

Live Performances and Industry Support

Attendees were treated to a rare, stripped-back live performance where Wilson, backed by her band, debuted the title track, “Sound of a Woman,” alongside the poignant new song “Your Mother.” The performance drew praise for its lyrical depth and Wilson’s signature soulful delivery.

Key industry figures in attendance to show their support included BMI’s Barbara Cane, Tracy McKnight (VP of Film, TV and Visual Media), and Tracie Verlinde. The event underscored BMI’s ongoing mission to provide a platform for female voices during a month dedicated to their historical and contemporary achievements.

With Sound of a Woman arriving on May 1, the listening session provided a definitive “cultural imprint” for Wilson’s latest era—one defined by resilience, creativity, and the celebration of the female experience.
