RM Says BTS were left in ‘a bad mental state’ after military service

RM has revealed that all seven members of BTS were “in a bad mental state” after completing their mandatory military service.

The group – RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook – first announced their hiatus in June 2022 so each member could fulfil South Korea’s 18-month enlistment, a process they all wrapped by June 2025. When Jin was discharged a year earlier, the band privately opened up to one another about how difficult the separation had been.

Speaking on Weverse, RM recalled: “When Jin-hyung was discharged from the military … everyone was in a bad mental state.” He said the members ended up in tears over dinner, realising they needed “to work harder to hold this [team] together.”

BTS reunited publicly on July 1, 2025 during a Weverse livestream, confirming they were already preparing a new album for early 2026. ARIRANG arrived in March, and the group are now deep into a huge world tour supporting the record – a run projected to generate more than $1 billion across ticket sales, merchandise, licensing, albums and streaming.

They recently added a global live cinema event to the schedule, announcing that BTS WORLD TOUR ‘ARIRANG’ IN BUSAN: LIVE VIEWING will screen in cinemas worldwide on June 13. The broadcast marks their first return to Busan Asiad Main Stadium since their final full-group performance in 2022.

When the tour came to Mexico in May, more than 50,000 fans packed into Mexico City’s Zócalo Square as BTS made a balcony appearance at the Presidential Palace following a meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Fans had been gathering since early morning, singing along to the group’s biggest hits and shouting the members’ names long before the band stepped outside.

When BTS finally emerged, the square erupted, turning the historic centre into one of the largest fan scenes the city has hosted in recent memory.

Before greeting the public, the group spent roughly 40 minutes in discussion with President Sheinbaum after accepting an official invitation from her office.

She had confirmed the visit during her daily “Mañanera” briefing, where she praised the band’s music, saying it “delivers messages of friendship, peace, and love.”
