Rosalía has spoken out about “cancel culture” after facing criticism for not publicly voicing support for Palestine.

In July, the Spanish singer-songwriter came under fire after fashion designer Miguel Adrover announced he would no longer create a custom dress for her, saying he doesn’t work with anyone “who doesn’t publicly support Palestine” amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.

Responding to the backlash at the time, Rosalía told French newspaper Le Monde that she had locked away her phone to focus on creating her new album Lux, which explained why she wasn’t “more present and more vocal” about the conflict.

In a new interview with The Guardian, the Motomami singer shared her thoughts on cancel culture.

“I see a lot of this cancel culture happening in general, in internet, for everyone,” she said. “That is always strange to me. I think there’s a need of much more culture of forgiveness.”

She added, “I wouldn’t cancel a friend because we think different.”

Rosalía went on to acknowledge that she has “so much to learn”.

“And definitely, I always feel like I have so much to learn and I always try to do things better,” the 33-year-old said. “But at the same time, I like a lot something that Barthes said (about) the ‘anti-hero … who can bear contradiction without shame’. We all have contradictions.”

“It’s impossible not to in a world as imperfect and contradictory as the one we live in,” she continued. “So I try to stay connected with what my mission is, which is to make music from the most loving place possible.”

The singer released Lux, her fourth studio album, on 7 November.
