“Running through the walls to get to the dance floor”: Olivia Rodrigo talks new music and British obsessions

Pop superstar Olivia Rodrigo joined Hits Radio’s Breakfast Show trio—Fleur East, Will Best, and James Barr—for a “Friday Fry Up” interview to celebrate her new music. The 23-year-old musician opened up about her highly anticipated project, You Look Pretty Sad for a Girl in Love, while sharing her deep affection for British culture, karaoke favorites, and the complexities of modern romance.

Reflecting on her songwriting evolution, Rodrigo discussed moving past the signature heartbreak of her earlier work. “I set out making this record wanting it to be about romantic love in more of a positive sense because I think my last two albums are notoriously very heartbroken and angsty,” she explained. However, the creative process naturally shifted, leading to a more nuanced collection. “I injected a lot of it with some sadness and some melancholy and fear,” Rodrigo revealed. “I think I realised that that’s something that all my favorite love songs had, was like a little bit of like sadness that really grounded it in something real… I think being in a relationship and being like, everything’s so awesome, this guy’s so great but I think real life is always a little more complicated.”

Beyond the recording studio, the singer expressed a massive fondness for the United Kingdom, specifically highlighting her favorite culinary discovery. “You know what I’m really obsessed with that’s British is the soldiers,” she confessed. “You guys have a jammy egg and then you cut up the toast and then you just sit in the egg… Yeah, I love that.” She admitted the meal helps keep her mood stable, adding, “If I don’t eat breakfast come noon I’ll be like really hangry.”

The interview also touched on her leisure time, prompting Rodrigo to enthusiastically share her ultimate party anthems. “My favorite karaoke song? I really love Dancing Queen by ABBA. Get on the table. That’s awesome,” she joked. “If I’m ever out anywhere and they start playing ABBA I’m like running through the walls to get to the dance floor. Like that’s the dream.”
