The venue achieved global music folklore status when it was chosen as the backdrop for Stephen Wright’s famous inner-sleeve album photograph featuring band members Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, and Mike Joyce. The red-brick building subsequently became an international pilgrimage site for music fans, drawing visitors from 73 countries to its dedicated Smiths Room.
Walsh, a lifelong fan who witnessed the band perform during the summer of the album’s release, will debut the new poem live on the club’s famous front steps at midday on Saturday, June 13. The live performance forms the centerpiece of a public anniversary event running from 11 am to 3 pm, which also includes themed lino-print workshops and exclusive gladioli-inspired merchandise.
While the celebrity connection forever changed the profile of the building, Salford Lads Club has actively served local youth since 1903. Project manager Leslie Holmes noted that the anniversary coincides with recent architectural restoration work funded by Historic England, ensuring the institution continues its foundational mission to support the community.
The anniversary celebrations will span multiple days in June, kicking off on Thursday, June 11, with the official launch of a new biographical book tracking the history of the band. Additional weekend programming features orchestral performances by Smiths on Strings, dedicated walking tours, and community music events hosted by MishMash Records. Throughout the festivities, the landmark venue will open its doors to the public, offering full access to its historic Wall of Names, archive spaces, and local cafe.
