Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has been accepted into a drug abuse rehabilitation programme that could reduce his sentence by up to a year.
The fallen music mogul was convicted of prostitution-related offences and is serving his sentence at the Fort Dix prison complex in New Jersey.
A spokesman for Combs confirmed he had been accepted into the programme, the New York Times reports.
The programme is offered at the federal prison complex, where Combs recently arrived after a judge sentenced him to more than four years.
With the time served, the Bureau of Prisons listed his release date as May 2028.
The drug abuse rehabilitation programme, which involves intensive therapy, could take off even more time.
Combs’ spokesman, Juda Engelmayer, said in a statement on Monday that Combs is “committed to sobriety, focused on healing, and trying to set an example for others”.
Combs’ lawyers have said that he had abused drugs, including opiates, in the past, but has been able to get sober while in jail.
At his trial, evidence was introduced about his drug use. Federal agents who raided his mansion before his arrest recovered cocaine, ketamine, MDMA tablets and benzodiazepine pills.
At Fort Dix, the rapper has been sleeping in a nine-person room within a unit that houses about 200 inmates. Engelmayer revealed that Combs works in the chapel library.
On Friday, TMZ reported that Combs had been caught in prison drinking homemade alcohol, but Engelmayer denied the report.
