Slipknot drop cybersquatting lawsuit against Slipknot.com

Slipknot drop cybersquatting lawsuit against Slipknot.com

Slipknot have dropped their lawsuit against an alleged cyber-squatter, who they previously claimed was using the ‘slipknot.com’ domain.

The suit was originally filed back in October under the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act 1999, with the band originally seeking ownership of the site, as well as unspecified damages.

As of January 22, however, the band has voluntarily dismissed the legal action, per Metal Injection. Slipknot have not yet commented on the lawsuit dismissal.

As reported by Billboard at the time, the band filed a federal lawsuit in October, in which they alleged that an anonymous individual had been in control of the URL since 2001 and had been using it to advertise counterfeit merchandise for the band.

The band claimed that they have been unable to use the domain in the intervening years and have instead hosted their online store at slipknot1.com.

Slipknot’s lawyer Craig Reilly said at the time: “The domain name was registered in an effort to profit off of plaintiff’s goodwill and to trick unsuspecting visitors – under the impression they are visiting a website owned, operated or affiliated with plaintiff – into clicking on web searches and other sponsored links.”

“A fan of plaintiff or someone who otherwise wanted to purchase authorized Slipknot merchandise would undoubtedly visit the slipknot.com website assuming it belonged to plaintiff and then purchase the slipknot merchandise linked to on the site, causing damages to plaintiff,” Reilly added.

Billboard noted that the cyber-squatter remains anonymous, but they do own a post office box in the Cayman Islands.

In other news, the band’s percussionist, Clown, recently said they hope to release their long-delayed “lost” album ‘Look Outside Your Window’, this year.

The album was recorded by Clown (real name is Shaun Crahan), Corey Taylor, Sid Wilson and Jim Root at the same time as they were working on 2008’s ‘All Hope Is Gone’. To date, only one track from the sessions has been released – the ‘All Hope Is Gone’ bonus track ‘Til We Die’, which often plays over the PA at the end of their shows.

They have teased the eventual release of the album since 2019, when Crahan said that the band were readying the release, with Taylor later adding that he “tried like hell to make those worlds come together” to complete the project. Meanwhile, Root has mentioned that he has threatened to leak it on multiple occasions.

When speaking to NME in 2020, Crahan revealed the band almost dropped it over Christmas 2019 but ultimately decided against it because they didn’t want it to interfere with sixth studio album ‘We Are Not Your Kind’.

Both Crahan and Taylor have said that ‘Look Outside Your Window’ doesn’t sound like a usual Slipknot record, and have gone as far as to compare the songs to Radiohead.

Meanwhile, Slipknot are also working on new music, according to their recently recruited drummer Eloy Casagrande.

Speaking to Drummer’s Review, he said: “We are cooking, we are doing some new music, for sure”. While he didn’t give any specific details, he added: “Since I joined the band, we have been working on some new ideas. We keep exchanging guitar riffs, drum beats, so we are always doing something. We had also some jam sessions.

“So, we have a lot of material right now. We just have to sit and put everything together, start jamming, and it’s happening. It already happened. It’s gonna happen in the future. So new material is coming, for sure.”
