Snoop Dogg is set to feature in a new sci-fi film by Luc Besson called The Last Man.
Rumours that the rapper would be making his way back to the big screen come after the ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’ rapper hinted that he was working on a project “in the vein” of Planet of the Apes last month.
While details at the time remained vague, he did go on to say that the project would use “dogs instead of apes”.
Now, Variety has shared a report of a new project by Besson called The Last Man, which has a similar description and is set to begin filming in the new year.
According to the outlet, Besson will pen the screenplay and is expected to keep it in a similar realm to his 1997 cult classic The Fifth Element, in the sense that they both mix sci-fi and comedy.
“I’ve been a big fan of Snoop Dogg’s music ever since ‘Who Am I,’” said Besson (as per Consequence). “We first met 20 years ago, and we’ve always wanted to work together again. We just needed the right project that would excite us both — and this is it, with Snoop in the lead role. I can’t wait to get started!”
Snoop Dogg shared his appreciation for Besson too, adding: “Ever since I’ve seen The Professional, I’ve always wanted [Luc] to direct a whole movie for me. Now we finally get the opportunity for him to write and direct me in a Luc Besson movie.”
While filming is set to begin in 2025, at time of writing the release date remains uncertain, as do other details about the plot. It is known, however, that The Last Man will be co-produced by Virginie Besson-Silla and Luc Besson for EuropaCorp, alongside Snoop Dogg and Sara Ramaker through their Death Row Pictures banner.
Both Snoop and Besson have worked together before this too, as the rapper lent his voice to the character of Max in Besson’s 2006 animated fantasy film Arthur and the Minimoys. More recently, Snoop said that he wanted to make a leap into UK television, too, stating that he would like to become the new host for Masterchef following the controversy around Greg Wallace.
Outside of the new film, Besson is working on a new adaptation of Dracula called Dracula: A Love Tale, while Snoop Dogg today (December 13) dropped his new album ‘Missionary’.
In a new three-star review, NME described the record as an “underwhelming sequel to a hip-hop classic”.
“It’s been over 30 years since Snoop Dogg dropped the Dr Dre-produced ‘Doggystyle’ – the album that brought G-funk to the world […] ‘Missionary’ doesn’t follow in the footsteps of the history-making hip-hop classic, though. Instead, Dre and Snoop wanted to “show a different level of maturity” with a motivational – yet unpolished – record to close out 2024,” it read.
“‘Missionary’ is an underwhelming sequel where the inspirational tone feels forced, and the sonic versatility hinders the whole project. Dre and Snoop forgot the legacy they created for the West Coast with ‘Doggystyle’ and – although there are flashes of fun – the forgettable collection barely scratches the surface of their legendary status.”
