BBC Radio 2 has officially crowned “Superstition” as the Ultimate Stevie Wonder Song, following a massive audience vote that saw fans choose from a shortlist of his 60 most-played solo tracks. The results were revealed by legendary broadcaster Trevor Nelson during a special New Year’s Day countdown, celebrating 50 years since the release of the landmark album Songs in the Key of Life.

A Timeless Classic Claims the Top Spot

Released in 1972 on the album Talking Book, “Superstition” remains a cultural phenomenon. Noted for its iconic Hohner Clavinet opening, the track earned Stevie Wonder Grammy Awards for Best Rhythm & Blues Song and Best R&B Vocal Performance. It was his second US number one, arriving a decade after he first topped the charts as a 13-year-old with “Fingertips, Pt 2.”

“It’s a stone-cold classic and a guaranteed floor-filler,” said Trevor Nelson. “It has one of the best intros to a song ever made. The Radio 2 listeners have spoken, and it’s hard to disagree with them.”

The Podium and the Top 60

The voting was fierce across Wonder’s deep catalog of hits. The upbeat “Sir Duke” (1977) secured the silver medal, while the 1968 soul staple “For Once In My Life” took third place. Rounding out the top five were the beloved ballads “As” and “Isn’t She Lovely.”

Jeff Smith, Head of Music for Radio 2, emphasized the artist’s enduring appeal: “Stevie Wonder’s music is timeless and melodic at its core. From heartbreak songs like ‘Lately’ to declarations of love like ‘My Cherie Amour,’ his music touches everyone.”

A Celebration of Musical Genius

The festivities continued on New Year’s Day with The Wonder of Stevie, hosted by DJ Spoony. Growing up in Hackney, Spoony recalled how Wonder’s music “stopped him in his tracks” as a child, though he only fully grasped the scale of Stevie’s innovation and songwriting genius later in life.

With 25 Grammy Awards—the most for any male solo artist—and over 60 years in the industry, Stevie Wonder remains one of the best-selling musicians of all time. This fan-led tribute confirms that his influence on the UK’s musical landscape is as strong as ever in 2026.
